Pigeon Net

Bird netting, also known as pigeon netting,Pigeon net is a  net used to prevent birds from reaching certain areas, encouraging them to move on to an easier roosting place.

Bird protection netting comes in a variety of shapes and forms, The most common is a small mesh (1 or 2 cm squares) either extruded and bi-oriented polypropylene or woven polyethylene.

Pigeon net is commonly used to protect crops and buildings from bird damage. Nylon bird netting has very good alkali resistance, toughness, high strength, and abrasion resistance. Therefore, it is commonly used to produce nets for trapping various animals, including nylon netting for bird protection.

Buildings are made rodent proof to block the entrance of rats and house mice, and bird netting is used to prevent pigeons, swallows, and house sparrows from nesting or roosting on buildings as well as to restrict entrance.

Pigeon net creates a taut mesh barrier to deter pigeons from perching on buildings, particularly on roofs. It is also used at entry points to buildings to stop pigeons from getting in.

In many cases nylon bird netting is provided at height and often in areas that are difficult to access, so it is important to ensure that specialist access equipment is available such as a scissor lift . Health and safety is also a major consideration and if a ‘home’ installation is being undertaken a thorough risk assessment should first be carried out.

The basic principle of protecting a building with bird netting or pigeon netting is to completely exclude the target species from the netted area. To achieve this goal the netting has to be installed as per manufacturer’s recommendations and to an extremely high standard. The netting is held in place by a suspension system that involves the provision of highly tensioned steel or stainless steel wire rope around the periphery of the area to be protected. Once the wire has been installed and tensioned the netting is then attached to the wire by retaining clips called ‘hog rings’. The netting is pulled tight and square prior to the final retaining clips being installed. The netting is then checked to ensure that there are no gaps large enough for the target species to enter the netted area and this completes the installation

Prior to undertaking any works it is important to survey the building thoroughly in order to choose the correct hardware required to suit the fabric of the building concerned. Hardware will vary depending on whether the retaining wire is to be installed into wood, concrete or onto steelwork. In many cases the installation will involve installing the retaining bolts and clips into more than one material.
